Here is something I see every year working across\u00a0Bayside\u00a0and the south-east. Homeowners spend time in autumn tidying the visible stuff, cutting things back, clearing leaves,\u00a0maybe repotting\u00a0something. Then winter arrives, the rain sets in, and by July,\u00a0they are standing in the garden wondering why three plants that looked fine in March are now half\u00a0dead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is\u00a0almost always\u00a0underground. The soil going into winter is what\u00a0determines\u00a0what comes out of it. And most gardens in this part of Melbourne are carrying at least one soil problem that autumn is the right time to address,\u00a0<\/span>which is why getting the right\u00a0<\/span>soil advice\u00a0before winter matters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As an experienced horticulturist in Melbourne, I have been working in gardens from Bentleigh to Beaumaris,\u00a0Mordialloc\u00a0to Port Melbourne for more than ten years. The soil behaviour across those suburbs varies more than most people realise. What I see going wrong in winter is\u00a0pretty consistent. Here is what matters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”There Can be Very Different Soil Situations” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]This is the thing that trips people up most.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0apartment\u00a0blocks where quite\u00a0often\u00a0the topsoil was replaced during construction & in the eastern suburbs, soil is clayey\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Th In winter, when\u00a0nothing’s\u00a0evaporating and\u00a0it’s\u00a0raining constantly, waterlogging becomes\u00a0a serious issue. Roots sitting in soggy clay for weeks just rot. Plants that looked great when you planted them start dying by mid-winter and everyone blames the cold when\u00a0it’s\u00a0actually the\u00a0soil.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where suburbs sit on sandier, more freely draining ground. The winter problem there is not waterlogging. It is that water and nutrients move through too fast. Sandy soil loses organic matter quickly and plants can go nutrient-deficient through winter without any obvious cause.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Different problems. Getting\u00a0<\/span>soil remediation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that fits your site rather than generic advice that assumes one soil type across the whole region makes a real difference to what you do and when.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”What Good Autumn Soil Prep Looks Like” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\"\"For clay-heavy gardens the priority is drainage and structure. For sandier gardens, it is organic matter and nutrient retention. Both benefit from a few things in common.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Check what is\u00a0happening\u00a0below the surface<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You do not need to dig deep. In clay, problems show up in the first 10 – 20 centimetres. Dig a small hole with a trowel, press the soil between your fingers. If it sticks together and smears rather than crumbling, you have clay that will compact further under winter rain. A grey or bluish tinge deeper down means the soil has been sitting wet long enough to become\u00a0oxygen-depleted. Roots need oxygen.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0where roots become challenged \u2013 they start to die or rot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    For free-draining\u00a0soil,\u00a0the test is different. Water the area and come back the next morning. If the surface is already bone dry again, organic matter is too\u00a0low\u00a0and the soil is not holding what plants need through the cooler months.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Adjust pH before winter locks things in<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Many garden plants want a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, some below that. Outside that window, nutrients are present but chemically unavailable. Plants starve even when the soil is fed. Unsuitable pH can also be\u00a0an indication\u00a0of other issues. I can measure pH & make remediation\/amelioration recommendations<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Feed the biology, not just the surface<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Compost or aged manure worked into the top 10 – 20 centimetres does something that most people underestimate. It feeds the microbial life in the soil rather than just adding surface nutrients. Through winter, that biology keeps working at a slower rate, breaking organic matter down into a form plants can use. By September, when growth picks back up, there is a reservoir of available nutrition ready. Gardens that skip this step often look slow to get going in spring and owners cannot work out why.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        For sandy coastal soils,\u00a0especially, this is not\u00a0optional. Sandy ground loses organic matter\u00a0fast\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0single good\u00a0compost application in\u00a0autumn\u00a0makes a measurable difference to how plants hold\u00a0through\u00a0winter,\u00a0<\/span>forming an important part of basic\u00a0<\/span>soil remediation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Mulch properly, not just heavily<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Five to seven and a half centimetres of quality mulch over your beds going into winter keeps the soil temperature stable, slows moisture loss on those dry winter days, and stops winter weeds that\u00a0remain\u00a0very active.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Struggling Plants Will Not Fix Themselves Over Winter” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]If a plant has been looking off since summer, yellowing, stalled, dropping\u00a0<\/span>l<\/span>eaves<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>t should not be dro<\/span>pping<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0win<\/span>ter will not sort it out. A stressed p<\/span>lant going i<\/span>nto co<\/span>l<\/span>d<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0w<\/span>et\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>onditi<\/span>ons is in a bad position. Waterlo<\/span>gg<\/span>ing<\/span>, fun<\/span>ga<\/span>l issu<\/span>es,<\/span>\u00a0and ro<\/span>ot problems all\u00a0<\/span>hi<\/span>t ha<\/span>rd<\/span>er when a plant has no reserves.\u00a0<\/span>Autumn is genuinely the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>st time to addr<\/span>ess\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ailing or sick plants<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0pr<\/span>oper<\/span>ly<\/span>. In most cases<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the underlying<\/span>\u00a0cause is soil-related<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and needs some level of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>soil remediation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to properly correct.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Di<\/span>agno<\/span>se it now, trea<\/span>t it,<\/span>\u00a0and the pla<\/span>nt has<\/span>\u00a0a real<\/span>\u00a0chanc<\/span>e.\u00a0<\/span>Leav<\/span>e it until October\u00a0<\/span>and you are o<\/span>f<\/span>ten r<\/span>eplacing<\/span>\u00a0it.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”The Irrigation System Needs Attention Too” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Most residential irrigation setups across run pop-up heads or drip systems through lawn and garden beds.\u00a0A common problem\u00a0I see in winter is pop-up heads that were fine through summer, causing surface pooling on clay lawns once the ground gets saturated.\u00a0<\/span>The system keeps running like\u00a0it’s\u00a0still summer and the\u00a0water’s\u00a0got nowhere to go. Either way whether your soil is heavy or not – getting your\u00a0<\/span>garden irrigation system<\/span><\/a>\u00a0checked in autumn means dialling back how often it runs for winter, finding heads that are adding to waterlogging, and sorting out any leaks or blockages before they become a nightmare. Running the wrong irrigation schedule on clay soil through winter does real damage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          Note also &\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0be confused, winter can at times be cold but dry \u2013 your irrigation or hand-hosing should not be dialled back\u00a0too much, if\u00a0lack of rain is noticed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”When to Get a Proper Assessment Rather Than Keep Guessing” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Autumn Soil Prep Checklist” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Six things worth doing before the cold properly lands:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          1. Dig a small test hole and feel the soil. Clay that smears and sticks needs gypsum and organic matter worked through it before winter rain compounds the problem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          2. Get a horticulturist (refer next page) to run a pH test, for purposes of\u00a0adjustment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          3. Work compost or aged manure into the top 10 to 20 centimetres of garden beds, particularly in sandy coastal gardens where organic matter content can be low. A horticulturist can help with suggestions or application of soil conditioner.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          4. Apply 5 \u2013 7.5 centimetres of quality mulch across beds.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          5. Look honestly at any plants that have been struggling and get professional soil advice before winter makes the underlying problem worse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
          6. Adjust the irrigation schedule for winter demand and check that pop-up heads are not contributing to surface pooling on lawn areas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

I regularly visit gardens where the owner has been adding fertiliser and\u00a0products\u00a0for years,\u00a0with poor\u00a0results. The cause is usually something in the soil chemistry or structure that no amount of surface treatment will fix. Once that underlying issue is sorted\u00a0<\/span>through proper\u00a0<\/span>soil remediation<\/span>, the same garden responds to basic care in a way it never did before.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            That is what a site visit is for. Come out, assess the soil properly, look at what the plants are doing, and give you a clear picture of what is\u00a0going\u00a0on and what is worth doing. No vague advice, no unnecessary products.             The gardens that come through winter well and get moving quickly in spring are the ones that had some attention put into the soil in autumn. Not a lot of attention.
